Ever since CA's solar utility rates changed last April 15th, I think anyone wanting to install solar in California should do a microgrid. If you install a microgrid - solar, storage, energy controller, ability to operate without the utility supplied energy from the grid - CA's new solar utility rates won't impact you. It is a more expensive and complex investment to build a microgrid, but a microgrid is the best solution if your goal is to not only generate clean energy but also to have energy independence, resilience, and the ability to provide power during grid outages. Eg., if you have your own microgrid, you don't need to depend on the value that the utility compensates you for your solar energy production since the solar energy can be self-consumed.
