Container Shipping

An interesting read on shipping containers at sea is in The NY Times today, which noted that switching a single shipping container ship to run on green methane would result in producing 100 fewer tons of greenhouse gas per day, an amount equivalent to the emissions of 8,000 cars. Shipping Contributes Heavily to Climate Change. Are Green Ships the Solution? That's a huge positive impact that can be made by switching out a single point source of pollution. The article said that cargo shipping accounts for roughly the same amount of global carbon emissions as the aviation industry. This seems like an important area to focus on since cargo shipping is so much more manageable to solve from a climate perspective than the aviation industry. I'll be watching to see what global rules the International Maritime Organization (the United Nations body that regulates global shipping) adopts. Maybe subsidies or tax credits for green alternatives like wind, methanol, ammonia and hydrogen? I"d pay more for my products if they were guaranteed to come from a green shipping sector.
