Distributed Storage Policy Ideas

I'm interested in hearing people's perspectives on what they think would be the best government policy to grow the onsite storage market for homes/businesses more quickly.

I think simply making things cheaper for consumers are the best policy tools to incentivize more home/commerical solar installations. Over the past few decades, it's been largely rebates and tax incentives that have propelled the distributed solar industy to its current market space.

More research on the importance of distributed solar will also help in speeding up the roll out. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory just published a report (nov 2023) that analyzes the evolving role of solar+storage for home backup power. The analysis shows how the size of storage needs change as homes become more efficient, flexible, and electrified. Here a link to their study: Solar + Storage for Household Back-Up Power: Implications of building efficiency, load flexibility and electrification for backup during long-duration power interruptions
