Climate Change Debate

I'm trying to fact check the actual numbers of scientists that agree climate change is caused by human activities. What I'm finding is that liberal leaning sources pretty much agree and argue that 97% of scientists agree on man-made climate change, and conservative sources argue against it. Both sides have valid arguments. Very hard to separate truth from biased politic. I find that very sad.

In my opinion, specific numbers can often be disputed and anyone can say they are "unbiased." I recommend looking at the scientific credentials of the people providing scientific facts...

In 2024, the scientific consensus that human activities are causing climate change isn't disputed, at least by impartial scientific organizations and news outlets. I'm unsure what sources you would believe, so I'm unsure what to share. Maybe the following are ones that you might trust:

'Consensus' on climate change: what that does and doesn't mean - Christian Science Monitor

Documenting Climate Change Deception - Harvard Magazine

What Are the Causes of Climate Change? - NRDC

More than 99.9% of studies agree: Humans caused climate change - Cornell

Communicating the human causes of global warming increases public engagement - Yale

I'm sure you can find an article here or there or someone claiming to refute that human activities are the primary cause of climate change. That is simply the nature of the internet. In 2024, to not believe that human activities are causing climate change is like believing that the earth is flat.

I agreed with Jared. The internet can deal up practicially any content people want to reinforce their beliefs. Thank goodness there are people who have gotten PhDs in climate science who we can count on for accuracy. Jasmine - maybe share the credentials of the people who are telling you that the global scientific consensus doesn't agree human activities are responsible for climate change? That would give us something to discuss.... And, thank you for sharing your question with an open mind!

Is this a debate anymore? Whether your talking about 3% or 15% of scientists who are skeptical about whether human activitiies are the cause of climate change, don't we all want to err on making deicisions that have the greatest liklelihood of protecting a home and planet for our children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren?

This is a good list. There are thousands of peer reviewed, reputable scientific articles which have concluded the same thing. The only "articles" and "news" stating otherwise at this point will hide its ownership structure so the funding cannot be traced. Unfortunately, people are so desperate to have their beliefs supported that they will actually quote these sources!

I appreciate your question. At some point, I think you have to chose who you're willing to believe. For each person, that involves a different process based on their personal experiences. Undoubtedly, many of the leading educational and scientific institutions have concluded that human activities are the cause of climate change. But, you might look to a different source for your information. It can be very hard to dig deep under any of the institutions and news sources to determine their source of funding. If you can, that's usually the best way to determine if they have a "slant" on the issue.
Given the seriousness of the issue, I pose the following question to you: "Are you interested in contributing to efforts that could effectively combat climate change, if they hold even the promise (potential) of making a significant impact?"

All good comments and a good question. Too many people think there is an obvious answer to this question and fail to understand that a suprprising amount of people still don't believe climate change is even occurring! I think it's impossible for everyone to come to 100% consensus on this issue. We have too many pressing day to day concerns to think or worry about big picture items. The recent global action during the COVID response gives me hope though that we might collectively be able to act before things get too bad. We are capable of big things.
